My big game commercials reaction

At first I was kind of underwhelmed by the big game commercials. That was, until I saw the Doritos Baby commercial, as a father I could relate and my wife and I both laughed out loud when we watched it. We actually both agree that was our favorite commercial. For me, that was until the third quarter of the game, when the Toyota Prius bank robbery chase commercial aired. Now, I am I a little biased on this one because some of the highway chase scenes were filmed on the Amstutz Highway in Waukegan, IL and you see the city of Chicago.

From a marketing standpoint, Toyota plays off of the drama TV shows, Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, that are currently hot and being filmed in Chicago. They tell the story about what features the car offers without being overbearing to the consumer. Throughout the spot, the camera zooms in and out and makes you feel like you are watching a live chase. Then what happens? They incorporate how fast society gravitates to something and it becomes a viral moment that people are talking about. You see people at bars glued to the chase, standing on highway bridges with signs, talk shows talking to excited Prius owners and kids ecstatic to receive them as toy cars. Plus, who doesn’t like watching a high speed car chase? White Ford Bronco anyone?

Will the commercial make me get a Prius when I am in the market for a car? No, probably not. I think what they were trying to do was elevate the brand among men. Demonstrate to them that the Prius is a suitable car for them to show off to their buddies, be a family car, and yet has some muscle under the hood. Was it money well spent? Not sure. But for me, to see a small community, Waukegan, that I was connected to be seen on the national stage, that was pretty cool.
